This is the SIX30 News!

Thursday 9 August 2018

Thank you to all those who volunteered to drive a minibus to transport our young people to Soul Survivor at Peterborough (out on 18 August, back 23 August). We have now filled these roles.

Also if you provided items for the Syrian Refugee family, thank you, we have now got all we need.

Last Sunday at SIX30 we continued our summer series ‘Heroes of the Faith’ and James spoke about Joshua (Joshua 6:1-7 and Hebrews 11:30). Perhaps we could have sung ‘Joshua fit the battle of Jericho’, but there are theological issues with some of the words!

We’re all familiar with the story of Joshua’s army marching around the walls of Jericho for several days, but what on earth does it teach us today?

Glory The whole exercise seemed a pretty daft thing to do, and it clearly wasn’t the action of marching around the city and blowing trumpets that brought the walls down – that was purely down to God. It was all about realising that God worked the miracle and that the people’s response was to give Him the glory. Often we pray and forget to give God the glory when He answers.

Faith Being asked to do something ridiculous requires great faith. Hebrews 11:30 says, ‘By faith the walls of Jericho fell’.

  1. Do we take God at His word and believe what He says? Today’s culture often says’ ‘We can’t believe that’ or, ‘Show me and I then I might believe’. The Hebrews definition of faith says it is, ‘….being certain of what we do not see’.
  2. Do we take God at His word and do what He says? Sometimes this means abandoning our plans and seeking God’s plan for our lives. For this we have to pray – and that’s what God wants us to do.

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho?’ No! It was God who fought and won the battle and He deserved the glory.

This coming Sunday Kevan brings us the first of two sermons about Abraham (Genesis 12:1-8 and Hebrews 11:8-10).
